Sunday, October 27th, 11am-2pm: A Taste of Bhakti Workshop

Ecstatic Chanting with  Jai Uttal & Friends
Embark on a vocal journey through the sacred sounds of ancient India. With call-and-response group chanting and storytelling, Jai Uttal creates a space of invocation, prayer, and heartfelt expression. This meditative practice of calling to the divine creates a bridge between the individual and the eternal, opening the heart and welcoming the spirit. By singing these prayers and expressing a full range of emotions through our voices we join a stream of consciousness and devotion that has been flowing for centuries.

No previous experience is needed. This is an exploration of the heart, independent of vocal or musical technique.

Awakening Bhakti Workshop

Bhakti Yoga is the path of personal relationship with Spirit, with God, with Goddess; it’s a relationship that includes all the flavors and moods of the human heart. In the journey of Bhakti, your emotions become the fuel to reconnect you with the Divine and help you to find healing and wholeness within yourself. Through singing kirtan you can explore, express, and share the deepest caverns of your soul—and ultimately find the eternal springs of love.

For everyone who loves and practices kirtan (chanting the ecstatic songs of ancient India), this workshop will fuel your soul. Jai will share and demystify some of the secrets of kirtan. For with just a little understanding of music & rhythm, & a lot of self-acceptance, we all can sing, lead, & share our hearts with others. The practice of chanting can become our teacher, guiding us home.

Jai Uttal is a grammy nominee, kirtan artist, multi-instrumentalist, and ecstatic vocalist. He is considered a pioneer in the world music community with his combined influences from India and American rock and jazz.  Jai has been leading, teaching, and performing World Music and kirtan—the ancient yoga of chanting or singing to God—around the world for close to 50 years, creating a safe environment for people to open their hearts and voices.

He grew up in New York City and lived in a home filled with music. Jai began studying classical piano at the age of seven, and later learned to play old-time banjo, harmonica, and guitar. At age 17, he heard Indian music for the first time, and two years later moved to California and studied under the famous sarod player, Ali Akbar Khan. Jai later began taking regular pilgrimages to India, living among the wandering street musicians of Bengal, and singing with the kirtan wallahs in the temple of his guru, Neem Karoli Baba.
