New Moon Japa Meditation: Gayatri Mantra

The Gayatri Mantra originated in the oldest Vedic scripture, the Rig Veda, It has been chanted for thousands of years to honor Savitr, the divine embodiment of the Sun, who symbolizes the supreme source of light, wisdom, and spiritual awakening. Composed of a precise arrangement of Sanskrit syllables that create a profound vibrational resonance when recited or chanted, it has the sacred power to purify energy, illuminate divine wisdom, and open the gates of enlightenment.

The night before the new moon is the darkest night of the month. The new moon marks the beginning of a new lunar cycle and is the phase of the Moon that appears completely dark, as it is not reflecting any sunlight toward the Earth. Following the rhythms of nature, many women begin their monthly cycle shedding their system in tandem with the moon shedding its past and beginning again. This is a new powerful time for us to empty out the old, and welcome the new. Shedding isn’t always a pleasant phase but it always leads to enlightenment, our limitless potential. Just as enlightenment is the ever-increasing value of light within the consciousness of an individual, we will balance out the darkness of the new moon with the Gayatri mantra, the mantra of light.

Come join me ONLINE for this japa meditation where I will sing 108 rounds of this beautiful mantra with you as we tap into a potent time of introspection, reflection, and renewal, providing an opportunity to release the past and embrace new possibilities.

Here is the mantra and it’s meaning:

Om bhur bhuvahsvaha

Tat savitur vareniyam

Bhargo devasya dhimahi

Dhiyo yo nah prachodayat

“Calling on the Sun Goddess!

May my heart be illuminated.

Cleanse me of all delusions,

so that I can shine forth like thou art shining.”
