For anyone struggling to let go of the past, author Cheryl Strayed has some powerful advice: “Don’t surrender all your joy for an idea you used to have about yourself that isn’t true anymore.”

Many of us continue to cling to old regrets, disappointments or notions of what could have been. What we don’t realize, however, is that we’re letting something that’s long gone consume our present. “How long do we hold on to this old idea,” Cheryl says. “I was going to do this job, or I was going to go to this school, or I was going to be married to this person. And it doesn’t serve us anymore.”

The key, the author says, is accepting that the story you’re telling yourself is simply no longer true. Find out why Cheryl believes that if you want to be happy, it’s crucial that you rewrite your story.
